Best Wedding Photography of 2022

Once again it’s that time when I’m tasked with finding the best photos from the year past. It’s always hard but in 2022 I photographed more weddings than ever before, with some of them lasting two, or even three days. I’ve worked from Midlothian down to Yorkshire, both East and West coasts, gotten lost on Cumbrian back lanes (seriously SatNav, that’s a footpath! Who programmed you?), and met some amazing people. 2022 was absolutely spectacular and, as always, all my couples were a joy to work with.

One of the fabulous Northumberland Registrars once described working in the wedding industry to me as being in people’s “love bubbles”. I think that’s a great way to describe it. While they have the enviable role of conducting marriage ceremonies and uniting couples together, my role is to capture the heart of that bubble.

Being a wedding photographer - at least for me - means preserving the essence of the relationships present. Not just the couple whose day everyone is there to celebrate, but the feelings held for them by friends and family. I like to do that in different ways throughout the day. Most of what I capture is in a documentary or reportage style, which means that I don’t interfere or direct the photograph, I simply capture what’s in front of me. For me, these are the best photographs because they are genuine reflections of the day and how people felt in that moment. However, some things are a little more posed, and some more still. But that’s not to say that family photos all have to be super formal, after all, it’s a wedding and weddings should be fun.

Unposed

I believe that capturing the ephemeral moment is what wedding photography is all about. If you’re having a wedding then you want to enjoy it, and you want to look back on photos of all the people that you love most in the world enjoying it too. Not only that, but you want those moments to be beautiful.

Couple’s Portraits

When it comes to couple’s photos they’re a bit in between. You want pictures of the two of you looking gorgeous, but posing for ages is pretty dull. So it’s about striking a balance. I like to give a little bit of direction, and let my couples chat and enjoy themselves. That way, in years to come, the memories the pictures evoke will be of fun moments together.

Family Photos

Some pictures are a little more posed, because it’s impossible to guarantee that all close family members would naturally be standing together in an artistic way and that I would happen to take that shot at just the right time. That means that family shots are more organised, but I do try to do them quickly because, let’s face it, we’d all rather be drinking prosecco over smiling for the camera. That’s no reason the pictures can’t still be fun though! After all, it’s nice to have those memories of all the people that you love most in the world being together under one roof. And looking fabulous, of course.

Details and Scenery

Lastly, there’s the scenery and the details of the day. These are the little things that are so easy to forget as the years roll by, so I think it’s important to save those memories as well. It’s memories of the care and attention that you put into your day. The unique things that speak of your character, the love, the care, and the joy that went into creating the happiest day of your life.

I hope you enjoyed looking through this collection of some of my best wedding photography in 2022. If you like what you see or have any questions please feel free to contact me or drop by my North East Wedding Photographers homepage to find out more on the services I offer.
